Origin

ORIGIN

My Name's Henry Ley and I'm an Audio Engineer from Bucks, SE England.

I started playing guitar aged 5 and haven't stopped making noise ever since. I was first introduced to the world of audio when I was 8 and my father and older brother built a pair of speakers and started DJing local kid's birthday parties in the 90s.

All we had was pair of portable battery operated CD players and every NOW CD ever produced. I was transfixed and willingly squeezed into the back of the car between the gear to go to every gig they did, plugging in the wrong thing and generally being a nuisance. By the time I was a young teen however, I started booking my own gigs and it inevitably spiraled out of control from there.

At age 15 I set up an online radio station and later my school’s radio station as well as getting into local and hospital radio. At the same time I performed in youth theatre and dabbled in poetry writing and reading which I still enjoy today. My teens were spent recording music with terrible bands with worse haircuts and mixing the odd live gig or youth musical. When I was 21 I produced a visual album for a friend. 5 Tracks recorded live; vocals, drums, cello and guitar but recorded at 5 interesting locations, one of them in the middle of a forest, and another in a 19th century barn. I was instantly hooked on the idea of capturing performance out in the elements.

After doing both location sound and post-production sound for short films in my spare time while working corporate AV and events to pay the bills, in 2019 I made the transition full-time to filmmaking, strictly in the sound department, of course! Since then I've worked for the BBC, Sky+ Netflix and Netflix India, GRM Daily, as well as charities including Barnardos, MacMillan and DePauls. I've shot, designed and mixed foreign and independent film here in the UK as well as having worked on over 100 short films. It's safe to say, I love storytelling with sound.

It was soon after I went full-time in sound for film that a good actor friend, who was also a voice coach and a fantastic voice artist himself, turned me on to demo reels. We sat and scripted one together, I designed and mixed it and I was instantly hooked on the medium. More storytelling than any feature film packed into an explosive, audio-only package, it was me to a tee! I kept making reels for other actor friends and through conversation discovered that many voice artists are expected to engineer themselves at home! I felt I had to help educate and support voice artists, just teaching them some of the less obvious basics of audio engineering that can massively up their game and the quality of their deliverables.

I’m here to fill the demand for voice artists who require reliable, tailored audio engineering advice, guidance and tutelage, as well as the most exciting demo reels you can find today – And that’s how Reel Star Audio came to be.
